Double Standards

October 24 2011

I guess it is just a pet hate of mine, but something that really irritates me is when people have double standards. If I say I expect something of someone, I also expect to give the same courtesy I demand. This seems to put me in a serious minority so I was just wondering if some of my fellow forum peeps hate it as much as I do...What double standards have you encountered? What double standards have you caught yourself at? Does it bother you or do you just put it in the "Meh" box?

....or just people not living up to one's own self-imposed standards.I like to think that I have reasonably high standards of behaviour - treat people the way you expect to be treated, etc., etc., but I find that a lot of people I know can fall short of the mark. At times, it really irritates me, at other times, I make excuses for them. I don't consider that to be a double standard, though. Just frustrating as hell!

I was one of the first women working in outback NSW in the shearing shed. It was just after the wide comb dispute during the eighties when shots were actually fired. The double standards were rife then. Every shed I went to I had to prove my ability. The shed managers would usually not let me pick up. (work on the board picking up the fleeces) and I normally got stuck on the tables wool rolling. Probably designed so the shearers would not get distracted looking at my arse which was a younger shapelier version of the one I sit in these days. Managers would often crack dirty jokes in my presence expecting me to get all indignant about it however, I had been working in the sheds in NZ since I was 15 and if I fired a few jokes back it was them who raised the eyebrows. This was before the law changed and made it mandatory for sheds to have separate showers and toilets for women and it would be arranged for me to shower at the cockies house. All good for me and I never let on by so much as a raised eyebrow. Cockies wives always had beautiful bathrooms and plenty of clean fresh hot water and we are talking sheds that are too far out for electricity and I had to literally steal a 1/2 cup of water in the mornig from the cook so I could brush my teeth without swallowing grit. l I fought hard for the rights of women to work where they want in this country and I do seriously dislike double standards. Is it okay for a man to go to the pub after work every night but not his wife? I was at the Sustainable Living Expo in town on the weekend and did do a little pout because I could not join the Mens Shed. CWA Ladies is just not the same. I can crotchet, knit, make jam and scones with the best of them but I also like using a hammer and nails and building stuff. (not serious here folks just joking) l Some of the main double standards I encounter now are more old traditions than anything. Try outdoor bowls....Men and women do not play bowls together unless it is by invitiation to the mixed teams. Lions (The service club)..separate from the women....it is a mens only thing. Playing Rugby union at school. I grew up playing union, the girls here get to play touch....maybe. Why is it assumed that all girls are delicate?

I guess some examples for me:If you are old, out of shape, and plain, you are a delusional hypocrite asking for "hot, slim, attractive 20 year olds only"... seriously, get a clue.If you are going to ask for "an intellegent girl" please learn to spell intelligent. If you expect to get treated with respect, show respect for others. If you feel your opinion is worth sharing in the forums, and worth others' effort to read, have the courtesy to extend them the same right. (this is to noone specific, just a general statement that people have a bad habit of putting their two-bits' worth in, then getting uppity because the next post disagrees with them. Individuality is a blessing! Embrace it)Observed recently in a relationship between two friends of mine... what was ok for him to do before they got together (while he still had a girlfriend) is not ok for her to do now (because she is his)Wanting someone exclusively (not sharing) but cheating on themDemanding equality then expecting to get treated differently for having tits (sorry, feminazis shit me)Expecting to be waited on hand and foot by your woman then refusing to treat her like a lady (misogynists shit me too :P)Guess I'm just a little pissy lately

I tried to set my own standard, I spent hours re-writing my profile to reflect how I feel, and the content nazis see fit to modify it without my permisssion? Now if thats not the ultimate double standard... I don't know what is.

This is a great story Fionabee, and I assume you have left out some of the more difficult moments. Quoting 'fionabee' I was one of the first women working in outback NSW in the shearing shed. Why is it assumed that all girls are delicate?   Double-standards imply that a "standard" for one (perhaps well thought out, perhaps not) has been applied blindly and without thought to another. Expecting something from someone else when you don't do it yourself is not cool at all.Like you say LadyWench, expecting something from others which you don't provide yourself insults our intellygents, hehe!I mean... intellegence.Um...Oh crap.

Duplicity is difficult to stamp out as people always expect that they should be exceptions to every rule. Working in hospitality I saw guests loudly insist that we charge previous guests that damaged a $120- bedspread, then equally insist that they should not be charged $5.00 for the hair dye covered towel they left in their room.   I would really like to live in a world where double standards did not exist, but I don't see it happening. I think the best we can do is accept that we may be part of the problem and try to minimise it where we can.

If we all lived by it, things would be peaceful every where. Unfortunately, to most people, the golden rule is , "Do as I say, not as I do."

The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness We are all hypocrites depending on the day and the circumstance. I will say give me equal pay, I can fend for myself I am woman and strong. Yet I will get down on my knees if the right man demands it off me. I will smile as a man opens the door for me or gives me a seat on the train. And say thank you. I am a hypocrite to the bone. I can ask for a twenty year old guy, even though I am an old saggy boobed wench. The irony is that a man could try for that but unless he has a fat wallet he has a chance in hell. There are double standards its the way of the world. We bitch an moan that the Australian manufacturing business is extinct yet we buy everything from china. We complain about the dole bludger s, yet we go and buy online cause its cheaper and there goes a job. We wear a “save the whale” t shirt, yet fail to pick up our dogs shit in the park or beach. We decry drunks an violence in the street but go home short a few lines and punch our partners lights out. The biggie, we say we love oral sex cant spend enough time down there on a woman. Yeah and the cheque is in the mail. Double standard head jobs. Me go down on you half hour to an hour get lock jaw you go down on me, for two seconds and then say my turn. Those Top Gun jokes never get old.   And Nick, please put up the picture that remotely resembles you looking like, Tom Cruise in Top gear. maybe if i squint and get the right light?
