How to block SMS - anyone?

July 11 2010

Does anyone know how to unblock unwanted SMS? I am getting bugged by a cascading amount of unsolicited SMS which I can do nothing about. I'd rang up my mobile provider and they can't block the number for me - apparently there's still no such facility in the 21st century?!! I'd tried googling for a solution but works for networks outside Australia. Anyone knows of a workaround apart from changing my mobile number? PLEASE anyone????

Is it personal/stalkerish or commercial in nature? If it's personal then talk to the police, but if it's commercial you should contact the telecommunications ombudsman. They should be able to help (I would hope): http://www.tio.com.au/ good luck. Nothing shits me more than that sort of thing.

I had a similar problem a few years back. Some providers allow you to lodge a complaint that may result in the number being blocked from contacting you - however mine at the time did not. After much internet searching I discovered that some phone models have a block list. I invested in the appropriate model of Samsung, put them on block and never heard from them again (it automatically sends any txts sent by them to nowhere land). Works a treat. I accidentally added one of my friends to it and then thought they were ignoring me for 3 months! If you're particularly found of your phone and don't wish to change .... I have no other ideas sorry. :(

your mobile provider is telling you porkie pies because they can block numbers from contacting you. i recently had a problem with my ex and trying to get her out of my house, after alot of crap i finally got here out and when i went to ring her to find out why she took all my stuff i got the message that the number was disconnected, after a few questions to friends that knew her and i i found out that she had my number blocked from her phone so it can be done.if your provider keeps telling you they can not do it ask for a supervisor and if they say it can't be done tell them that you will go to the telecommunications ombudsman and that will more than likely get them off there ass and they will do it for you i hope that this helps you out MR CK

Hi Swiffles, Yes YES YES! Please tell me what sort of Samsung model it is?! I don't care if I have to fork out a bomb for it. The messages come through every 5 minutes which drove me crazy insane. Every time it beeps, my blood pressure goes up a notch. I realized that the provider can't do jackshit about it (at least mine can't). So yes if changing the phone helps, will run to the phone shop now! Does it work on international number and spam number as well? Hey Darkhorse, Thanks! Will try that option too. I am desperate so will give anything a go. I'd got both kinds - personal and commercial. I am logging onto that website now as we speak. Will let you know how it goes...

As dark horse says it depends if it is personal or commercial. If it is commercial you can go onto the 'do not call' website which I think is: www.donotcall.gov.au but google it and see you can register your home number and all mobile numbers on your account and then only companies you already deal with and charities can contact you for marketing and then you have the right to opt out of it directly with them.As for personal/stalker type ones i agree that perhaps a visit to the police might be the go or maybe reply to the txt threatening that you will go to the police if it doesn't stop (may be enough of a deterrent) if they are from here maybe report them to the site also and if it is a regular problem from people here then maybe a cheap prepaid phone for giving out your number here is the way to go (we have met a few people with 'play phones' who only give you their real number once they get to know you, which is a rather smart idea i think)Anyway best of luck with it and hope that is helpful,Mrs GC

I believe I had the Samsung D900i (neat little slide type). I quite liked the phone too actually once I got used to the different way of accessing menus and what not. You can also set it up so if certain numbers call they go straight to voicemail and your phone doesn't even ring. Great phone if you have a stalker and don't want to go to the hassle of changing your number.

Thanks guys, checked out the resources unfortunately the websites and ombudsman don't work as the SMS's came from an international location (UK). Ombudsman has zero jurisdiction over spammers outside the country. I tried ringing the number but it won't go through, it is probably sent from a computer server somewhere. Smart bastard, they are. Nevertheless, I had register my number under donotcall.com to avoid further blood boiling incident like this. My poor heart can't cope with the trauma :). But Swiffles, I am going to check out the Samsung first thing tomorrow. My phone provider is 3, called them a few times and spoke to the sup too (you know from those call centres from Bangalore). I was quite upset with that they can't do a thing but after a bit of researching there were indeed a few providers that could have the barring service but not all providers do. JJ, can you ask your guy if he can develop the most potent virus ever and send it across to eat them up!! But BIG thanks to everyone who offer your advice! U don't know how invaluable it is. Hi Swiffles, I went to the mobile shops today and they said that though the D900i comes with the feature, I still need to download some sort of barring application onto the phone before it can actually filters the calls. They can't provide the app itself but said I can google for the softwarre. Is that what you did when you purchased the phone? Thanks for your help! damn you spammers

More on Samsung: I had a Samsung SGH-E250, a cheap slide ph that is easily available on E-bay. Got security functions of all sorts. Can block no's same as Swiffles model, can be set so other sims don't work in it + message is sent to pre-programmed number. Passwords can be set to photo folders etc. Emergency code (press button) that sends message to pre-programmed no' in case of emergency. Good quality camera etc. My fav mobile so far, tho my new one (Sony) has lots of features, it doesn't have the security...Excellent tip on the donotcall.gov website Mrs GC. I had a quick look at the exclusions @http://www.caslon.com.au/donotcallnote3.htm to refresh my memory and had to laugh at...The scheme is however - * weakened by a range of exclusions (eg cold calling by political parties and charities is permitted) * does not protect small businesses * provides no protection for calls originating overseas.and the other exceptions that are now being made like research calls being allowed on Sundays. T'would be nice if we could decide our own settings for exclusion LOL... Good luck getting rid of them! Hugs... Mrs P'

Thanks Mrs P, but do you need to download a barring software before you can use that feature? That's what the phone guys said - no matter what mobile it is - need to download the software first. This is where I am confused! I thought that if the phone has the feature, it could just block the unwanted calls. I am also waiting for Swiffles to see what she says too. To make matters worse, I am leaving for Italy and Greece in a few days time and these bastards would cost me a great deal of roaming cost. I'd just counted the messages they sent me the last 24 hours - 18 texts! Grrrrrr.... I only just spotted your last post, hopefully I'm not too late to help before you head off. I never tried to use blocking features but my son has on his ph (not sure what model) and I can ask him later. I do know Samsung and Sony have their own websites n sure others do too lol where you can search for more info. Maybe go into a store and see what they can do there! Changing the number might be drastic but could be worthwhile. We did download software to transfer files between pc and mobile with no trouble from the Samsung site.Cheers for now, I'll post again later... There was no software needed at all - it was an inbuilt function of the phone. When I researched it back then there seemed to be a few Samsung models that came with it (just google search for Samsung and block or reject list). Mine was definitely a slide and in the $200 - $300 range. I think it was the D900i but I could be wrong on that detail .... it was a couple of years ago now.

Right on, thanks Swiffs & MrsP. The mobile phone guy was so wrong! After Swiffles's reply, I'd managed to find a few models of Samsung mobiles that has that blocking features - no software needed. Thanks heaps!!

from a forum post :tdmclean: There is a person who keeps calling and I would love to be able to block their number so it goes either straight to voicemail or not get through at all. Any suggestions? subhro: you can use some call filtering software like "Blacklist" or "Advanced Call register" to filter unwanted calls. They only work on Symbian OS phones. For blocking calls on a "normal" phone: call your operator.----------------------------------------------------------------------------I am guessing there is software that will do it for you depending on the phone. if they work i assume it will do sms as well .i was using one that records certain calls. yes i let those in the list know that when ever they did call the call would be recorded.... was only using it for work as the boss never remembered what he asked me to do when he called :)

Good news for anyone who needs to block either calls or sms.. SOLUTION Any new smart phone that runs mac os (IPHONE) or Google Android (HTC, Samsung galaxy, Sony Ericsson and many more) have downloadable apps that let you block calls and sms from specific numbers. They are a free download from your app market.. I have used the sms blocker for Android on my HTC to avoid annoying contact from malicious individuals in the past.
