is how much Melbourne has grown especially around the Docklands And so many cafes and little restaurants have popped up in the city, especially in the laneways Lygon St is still brilliant for Italian food, one of my fav places is Tiamos - good cheap Italian food next door to the excellent Readings bookshop and right opposite the divine Brunettis which has the the best cakes ever. Leave your diet outside I love how much Collingwood and Fitzroy has grown and developed and Gertrude St has the best bars and restaurants going I adore the Builders Arm in Gertrude St - order the pork roast to be shared by two (its huge with a side of potatoes) ..melt in the mouth pork and crackling to die for Cumulus in Flinders Lane does a awesome leg of lamb roast again to be shared by two....do not eat for two days before dining there - yum as Best rooftop bar in Melbourne is Naked in the Sky in Brunswick St- sweeping views of the city and serving yummy tapas downstairs at a reasonable price and they do a mean coffee martini by the jug load Eating in Melbourne I could go on and on If you have time and can plan ahead, and have the finances, treat yourself out to "Strictly Ballroom". Its brilliant, over the top and full on fun musical. Loved it Ian Potter Gallery is for free - just saw a Richard Avedon exhibition there and it was wonderful Southbank although nice, is over priced and over rated, avoid the Casino at all costs I love this city and I hope Freya you will enjoy it again too :-)

Freya, I regulary wine and dine 3-5 nights a week all over Melb. Twinks has well and truly got the place covered. Unless your staying for an extended stay, you will struggle to see and appreciate the above mentioned. I did notice you weren't given my address ;). Hope you enjoy your stay.... Tip

Hi Freya, Twinkles pretty much nailed it with all her great suggestions, and I agree with all of them. I think Federation square is worth a wander around its Melbourne's town square now and the area directly in front of it on the river, Birrarung Marr is delightful for a scenic stroll. My favourite roof top bar is Siglo , above the Supper Club on Spring St. Fantastic view over Parliament and great atmosphere. DeGraves st opposite Flinders st station is fun for laneway dining , if you feel like venturing outside the cbd , hop aboard the ubiquitous melb tram and go down to St kilda , walk on the pier or stop for cake in Acland Street. For a great view, head into the Sofitel , top end of Collins street and take the elevator to the 35th floor. You can have a drink at the cocktail lounge there, after 5pm I think and see all of the city spread out below you, its spectacular. Hope you enjoy your visit to our fair city ☺.

I left in '87 and have been back a few times, next trip I want to explore some of the wineries and breweries that have sprung up on the Mornington Peninsula.
