Not too sure where it all started and it probably did with a study using someone's profile and having to disclose the source..... insert "The people vs Larry Flynt" I don't bother putting this on mine as the main issue with using information from here is usually a scam where the photos are used and the writing plagiarized..... Hence my disclaimer: Sydney University and any other institutions, you have my expressed permission to use any or all of my profile description and any public pictures for research purposes. In fact, I would relish the sh*ts and giggles if ever I were to find this in the published literature. I know this would never happen but in the universe that it does, please send me a copy. Hey Roley, great question, better to ask than assume, hey. It has been asked a lot over time, not lately though :-), and I do not remember a single instance where any corroboration of the myth has offered. No substantiation via facts has been seen. But it can make for a lively conversation at times. I took a while because I love to Google as part of my information gathering, but probably didn't input the right search terms. So, I resorted to the site (I advance searched for disclaimer) and had a good laugh when I found a thread from 2007 (about Melbourne Universities) that pretty much debunks the theory in my opinion. The particular cut and paste paragraph is basically a lot of nonsense and nothing more. Surely anything in the average profile would struggle to be even a marginal random sampling of anything from which one could attempt to define as conclusive albeit if you were to look at the variations from an established norm you may be on to something. What...I don't know however Syd or Queensland or even Peter Pan universities would be looking to go hard bound as clinical research data. Now then if you were doing a study into ego overload, look to those profiles as they wreak of "I'm too sexy for myself" syndrome. It happens and as it resides in unprotected public domain then whose to say where any sort of interpretive data or assumptions may be from. Photos may be a bit different and actually covered by some quite obscure state and federal legislation however again a grey area in light of the nature of the publication. I’ve spent a fair amount of time watching nerds come in and out of communities. Some can’t help getting emotionally invested. They’re there to observe, at least that’s the ethical thing to do, but they can’t help getting involved. In essence those little disruptions create havoc with the way of things. Instead of people going about their business in the way things might naturally flow, there is upheaval, distrust, loss of face, manic change, all the result of external intervention. If only they would simply watch! I reserve my independent rights, and I do not agree to be quoted. Hugs Gaz

Sitting at the Alfresco area of a pub. A woman came outside, sat in another chair then proceeded to harrumph every time a car went past. I was too busy trying to get warm in the sun and wasn't really paying her any attention. Eventually she piped up and said loudly ''don't you just hate that?". Being that I was the only other person there I presumed this was addressed to me so asked her what she was talking about. She said that every time a car went past it slowed down to perve on her. She seemed to be somewhat heedless of the fact that there was one of those speed bump/chicane things right outside the pub. I pointed this out to her and explained that they were probably just not wanting to destroy the suspension on their cars. She was not swayed by this however, and resumed her harumphing. I have seen these disclaimers on this and other sites, presumed what they were for but always wondered why. I mean, our names aren't on here, some have mobile phone numbers listed (bad idea in my opinion), some have face pics but I'm fairly sure universities or indeed any agency cannot use a face pic without permission. Therefore, they might pull some quote from your profile or forum posts but you would remain nameless and unattributed. Therefore, who gives a shit? I remember when the whole Ed Snowden thing went down, how it became public that the US and other ''axis'' nations could see every site you visited, who you contacted etc etc. I was then, and am now, unfazed by this. Honestly, apart from here and the occasional Pornhub visit, my internet surfing is rather plain and uninteresting (at least to others). I must admit though, the fact that they could turn on your webcam or activate the voice recorder on your phone without it even being turned on kind of freaked me out, but then I thought ''why would they?". I am mostly dull in my daily habits, they would watch me for about 2 minutes and go ''why is he suddenly cleaning the light switches? A second ago he was giggling at himself farting - this dude makes no sense and is too dumb to be a terrorist'', before moving on to someone else.

To those who have said disclaimer....and yes I’ve messaged people who have it in the profile before and it’s kinda shrugged back and said “I dunno, I saw others had it and thought I should too??” But... I’d ask....how do they know if a member from Sydney University has taken a sample of their profile ?? Unless there’s a profile name called “Sydney University” they’re never going to know it’s been viewed by them are they?? Also it doesn’t take into account that stealth mode sees to it that you only know about those profiles that aren’t in stealth mode viewing your profile.... I've long been sceptical of that Sydney University disclaimer, and think it's a load of wank. I don't see how posting a statement on here or my Facebook page is enough for it to be construed as legally binding.I've always thought that wanky statement is more of a salve for the precious ego's of those posting it. However, while I'm no conspiracy theorist or the like...as I type this, there's a small piece of black tape covering the camera on my laptop. I never use it anyway. It can't hurt, can it..?
