Petty

September 27 2016

With spring just about upon us I have been watching everyone pull out their trusty ,dusty old Victa mowers and fire them up belching 2 stroke fumes and smoke every where .What I have also been taking note of are the nature strips. Now there are two types of mowers. Type 1 ) They mow their nature strip and their nature strip only. If there is a half meter of long grass between their side of the fence and the neighbours driveway - it stays long (doesn't matter if it then makes their lawn look just a little crappy) Type 2 ) They mow their nature strip and keep going- trespassing onto their neighbours place just to keep everything nice and neat ( maybe prompting said slack arse neighbours for next time) What type of mower are you? What other petty things need a line drawn between them? I ... err.... um.... what ? this has got to be one of the most random posts i have seen here i gota admit i spend a long time re-reading this trying to figure out if it was some very cleaver innuendo shenanigans but its seems your legitimately asking about lawn mowing mind blown I have a Sthil electric mower and its absolutely amazing its so light instantly starts with zero effort never needs fuels , fluids, oils or any other shit its a insanely clean and crisp cut super easy height adjustment too its battery so no lethal cords or anything either oh and its super quiet too, your vacuum cleaner would be louder the battery has enough power to do my yard 2 or 3 times over if i had the need for other tools, the battery just swaps into the other devices too if your going to go battery, invest in a brand you trust so you can go all in on their system its absolutely magical i dont have a front lawn so do not share your woes if i did and my neighbor was slack, id probably finish mine then just keep mowing theirs until my battery died so i could stick it on the charger i mean im out there already , might as well, its not like i takes effort with my machine ;) the less lines of petty in the world the better

Our neighbour on one side is a single lady so I mow her nature strip which is about 10m long to her driveway, not to prompt her, just because it's nice to do. She will take our bins out for us if we are away and put them back in without us even asking as well. We also pass all our kids hand me downs to her. Between our place on the other side and that neighbour is an opening to a reserve, which our fence line runs along beside (the reserve). I mow our fence line on the outside along the reserve and continue on another 30m down the fence line of the neighbour behind us too, who is an old bloke about 80 yo. Every now and again he will also poison along our fence line as he does his. I also mow and trim the edges along the pathway leading into the reserve for about 50m, to make it look nice and keep the path from growing over. Then the neighbors on that side, if there's no tenants in there I will do their nature strip and fence line as well as the owners are very good friends because we were neighbors for years before hey moved on. While these people help us out too, I do it as a good citizen rather than for any other reason. But in saying all this, the Mrs probably does the mowing more than I do... Someone has to look after the place when I am away for work. Hoping to pass all this over to the kids to look after in a year or two though! But it really is good to live in a generally good community where people look out for each other. OP your last question, I'd like to change to, "what other petty things DON'T need a line drawn between them?"

I would mow the neighbours nature strip so they don't have to. I have the mower out and it doesn't take much for me to mow theirs and lend a hand 😉 Petty - not letting a car merge in front of you (I'm in Queensland an apparently this law is an optional extra) because letting one whole car in front of you will ruin your entire day.

Are Soft's option 3. Now if I could only get them to come in and do the front and back yards...you know something he would if I asked him, he is a fantastic neighbour. What I do need is a man and a mower, and a hedger and and green waste skip to come visit; injury to my wrist/thumb means gardening and mowing is a no go zone for me for the forseeable future. 😯

My previous couple of neighbours I've always done their entire front strip when I had the mower out. Current neighbour is a bit touchy at times, so only do the small strip next to the driveway that intrudes a little onto their plot. When I was in my own home, I would do the neighbour's behind us (lived on a corner block) front lawn too at times, and he would reciprocate. We just had a fantastic friendship between us and would often help out with many things outdoors. Tall

it's still sitting there looking like a lost toy. I don't enjoy gardening one bit and wouldn't even water it if there was no auto retic. Now I have to get rid of all the stupiud weeds that have grown through my fake grass out the back and the rockj beds I put down after I put in a pull, decking and limnestone so I wouldn't have to mow the backyard....

But never have to do the other side. The man(???) who lives there does his more often than I do and he makes a point of not doing even one inch of mine. I love mowing and right now my yard is in desperate need of a mow. But rainy weekends are making this impossible and this weekend could be just as rainy..........or I could be hungover!!!!

I thought it was a good deal. I use to pay $80 to have it mowed. It's a big yard. I also pay for the fuel for the mower. I would love to give the money to a teenager but they aren't interested as it's too much hard work.

At our old house ,I used to zip across the road on my ride on mower and do his nature strip and spray his front garden for weeds, cos if I didn't ,it got 1ft tall full of weeds seeds and blew straight into our front yard and caused me a weed problem in our garden ,I didn't need or want ,so the extra 10 minutes in his place saved me hours of work in our place , and on occasion I'd whopper snip and my the old lady's place next door just to be nice after her hubby died ,who btw ,I found in his garden feet and legs pointing to the sky upside down in a bush, funny now ,not so much at the time ,lol - Posted from rhpmobile

"what else keeps us safe, except helping each other by reciprocal services? Only one thing protects our lives and fortifies them against sudden attacks: the exchange of benefits. Taken one by one, what are we? The prey of animals, their victims, the choicest blood, and the easiest to come by. Other animals have enough strength to protect themselves, and those that were born to wander and lead isolated lives are armed. But man is covered with a delicate skin: he has neither powerful claws nor teeth to instill fear in others; naked and weak as he is, it is fellowship that protects him. God has granted two things that make this vulnerable creature the strongest of all: reason and fellowship." So the being that on its own was no match for anything is now the master of all things. Fellowship has given him power over all animals; fellowship has conferred on this terrestrial creature control of another's sphere and ordered him to rule even by sea. It is this that has checked the incursions of disease, provided support for his old age, and given him comfort in his sufferings; it is this that makes us brave because we can call on it for help against Fortune. Remove fellowship and you will destroy the unity of mankind on which our life depends" - Seneca (4BC - 65AD), On Benefits 4.18.1-4

What is thing that thou sayeth? 😁 I don't do mowing. I get someone else to do it. Mowing is such a first world past time or obsession. 😁 In many third world countries, front and back yards are utilised by planting fruit trees and organic vegetables gardens and chooks or ducks roaming freely to help feed their families. a sustainable lifestyle. Quite smart really. 👍 It may not be conform to Western standards of landscape aesthetics, but it can be quite beautiful to see well organised garden beaming with aubergines, beans, herbs, sweet potatoes (tall bush, great foliage), tomatoes and pumpkin. the family is well fed and healthy and the neighbours can have some too. More rewarding and environmentally sound than large patches of lawn. IMO

Yours is understandable and you are not the average Joe blow living in the quarter acre land block. I have neighbours who are OCD about their small patch of lawns. Funny really. Like a religion. 😁 Where in some countries, we are woken on Sunday mornings to the sound of church bells ringing in worshippers or the mosques waking the faithfuls to worship, in Australia, it is not uncommon to be woken up on the weekends by the sound of angry Victa mowers or vicious sounds of whipper snippers, like a calling to the manicured lawn brigades. 😁 different horses for different courses. 😉 all in context.

I've mentioned previously, I'm renting on a hundred acres in rural SA. This afternoon, I stepped out the back door of my unit to see the steers. (They're currently in the adjoining paddock and were hanging around near my fence line just 3m from my door). This lot are between 8 and 12 months old and were delivered here just recently. They are still a bit skittish around people, but I've been gradually winning them over. Between this herd of steers and the last, the landlady destocked the property altogether for a couple of months. She took a long holiday overseas and we've had LOTS of rain. When she returned from holiday, she bought fewer replacement steers. Consequently, those portions of the property which are not still under water now have grass measuring between three and five feet tall! (We've regularly kept the grass immediately around the buildings to sensible lengths, and some areas like driveways have been sprayed). Anyway, I opened the gate to go around the North side of my unit and spotted what appeared to be a baby red-bellied black snake in the grass by the north corner of the bathroom external wall. I wasn't sure if it was alive (I have encountered a few dead baby snakes about the place), so I grabbed the steel star picket leaning on the wall nearby, reached out and prodded it's tail... Well, it is alive. It flared it's neck, licked the air, then quickly slithered to the bathroom north wall, then along to the corner where that wall meets the bedroom wall. The snake would be about 70cm long. (I had thought it was a baby because initially I could not see it's full length, but it is slimmer bodied than the live snakes I have usually encountered on the property). The steers who'd intently watched me stampeded across the paddock when they saw me and the snake both move. Laying in the corner of the intersecting walls since I got here, there is an old bathroom basin, a koppers log, and an old garden hose. The snake went in behind and didn't come out. Against my own usual advice to people, using the star picket I dragged that stuff out of there. I intended herding it away from my unit, but I discovered the snake had actually gone into my bedroom wall through a gap in the rusty corrugated iron sheeting forming that external wall! (This unit was converted from a shed). On occasion recently I have heard scraping noises in the bedroom wall at night, and now I know why. I have a neighbour living 50cm and a sheet of fibro away from my head! Bastard. Yet further reason to get outta here. Just gotta get through my current commitments.
