so youve been using other methods till now?? I went on it at 16, and nearly 30 years later am still on it with no problems what so ever . I had 4 planned pregnancies, went back on after straight back into cycle, no dramas. My Doc wants me off soon, but im so comfy on it i really dont want to change what has worked for so long

Just like any method of contraception, the pill isn't 100% safe in preventing pregnancy. There are certain things that will increase the likelihood of it being ineffective, e.g. vomiting and diarrhea, forgetting to take it (even for one day), and taking it at very different times of the day (you should take it at the same time every day). So if any of those circumstances occur you should use another method as well when having sex. I've been taking it since I was 18 and even during relationships when I haven't used condoms, I've never fallen pregnant.

Are usually the ones who miss a few pills regularly, or take them with other medication which stops them from working. If you read the information in the package that you get, it should explain what makes the pill less effective and when you should take extra precautions. The only problems I have ever had with the pill have been break-through bleeding, but that problem was solved by switching to a different type of pill. The benefits of the pill for me have been reduced period flow and reduced pain during that time (very very big plus for me!). Hope that helps. - Ms Otori

Yeah I was using the rod with no dramas, changed over to the pill as the rod had ran out of date, three weeks later noticing I'm eating more, sleeping more, feeling a tad sick in the gut, I just hope I'm not pregnant. I have had unprotected sex with a fwb heaps this month and I wasn't the best at taking it on time either :(. Just just stressing out. Trip to the doctors should hopefully tell me

Surely....... "doubling up" by using condoms as part of your safe sex routine should give some added reassurance?!DG

Waited 10 days but been told I should have waited a month just to be safe... With my fwb I don't need to use condoms as we only play with each other, when I'm with others I do use protection. I would have an ip so I can't have kids but I'm to young, which pisses me off my body I be able to decide what I do with it. I can't wait to go back on the rod

I missed this bit. If you waited ten days before having unprotected sex with your FWB you did the right thing, though as you are aware taking your pill at different times and other factors (like other meds) could have affected its effectiveness. I do hope you see your GP soon to know exactly where you're at.

sexy_butterfly, you can visit sexual health clinics, without any appointments to get tested for pregnancy. I am sure there should be one in your city. You could use over the counter pregnancy tests but those are not very accurate so you don't need to increase your stress with a false positive.I hope you just got a reaction to the pill or are sick with the flu. Never thought I would wish someone gets the flu before.

The better half has been having issues with the pill affecting her mood, sleepiness appetite weight gain and such. She knows a lot more than I do on it, degree in biomedicine. I'll get her to chime in. I think she's found a particular brand that works differently to the normal one and doesn't have the crappy side effects. - Posted from rhpmobile

I count myself lucky that I've never had any problems with it (well, I can be a moody bitch sometimes anyway so if I did get that from the pill I wouldn't notice ).

I had so many menstrual issues when I first started my period at the age of 12, my mother had not yet come to Australia at that time, the only sister that was with me didn't know what to do either, and there were no parenting figures whom I could turn to for help. So I went and saw a Dr who had prescribed me the Pill to treat the problems. I took them for 2-3 years continuingly and guess what...............my strong metabolism was damaged!!! I gained weight rapidly, cannot lose weight easily even with good diet and strenuous exercise like PT and regular swimming! So I stopped the pill, and didn't need to have any contraceptive protection until the recent years when I started exploring my wild side lolI find Implanon works best for me and my body, so I would recommend that if anyone is looking for a new method. And of course, use the condoms please as they do not only prevent pregnancy, they also help to prevent you from getting a STD!!!

Maybe he assumed I was using other methods of contraception & didn't think to warn me.... (I was actually in a relationship at the time.) I hardly ever get colds or flu & had never needed antibiotics so was blissfully unaware that they stop the pill from being effective................. My son is living proof of my failure to read ALL of the instructions & I should have thought to ask about my chosen method of contraception too. He was not my usual doctor & I was in a foreign place & full of flu & working full time hours plus had a busy part time job in a bar so needed to get better & get back to work asap.

I was under the impression that the drs use the same pregnancy test kit as you buy at the chemist ? When my (now ex) wife got pregnant 17 years ago, the dr actually joked at us, "did you do a home test ?"" Yes "we replied. "Ahh good, we should get the same result" Unless someone here has medical knowledge to the contrary, I think "home" test kits are on the money. Hp xo

I used took the pill in my younger years fell pregnant once and but that was due to me being a lil forgetful. But otherwise it did fine until 10 years later when I fell pregnant again, but this time is was due to taking medication that knocked out the the pill, I think I just took it for granted that it was still going to work lol!!! 10 years later after finding out of was pregnant I have a healthy 9 year old girl lol!!!   I did go back on the pill, but found my body actually started rejecting it, apparently its a "hormonal change" thang....so I actually have gone down the path of the Mirena IUD and I freakin love it, dont have to remember to take a pill everyday and it lasts for 5 years, just awesome!!!

I am currently on the pill and whilst we take other precautions against pregnancy I find that it isn't all that great. (TMI Warning) I find that even though I take it the same time every day it still doesn't seem to help with the cycle at all. It sometimes comes late or early, sometimes not at all!29 and then 25 years ago my mother fell pregnant with myself and my lil brother whilst on the pill. The reason? Apparently the orange juice which she used to take it with affected the pill in some way and wham bam, here are my bro and I. (Pill was taken the same time everyday, same routine as me, next to the kettle while I am waiting for my morning coffee!)Everyone is different and the only method of contraception that is totally effective is not having sex at all. (not my idea of fun!)

I assume you mean the pellet they insert under the skill that acts in the same way as the pill?If so, don't be fooled... nothing is 100%.12 years with the Ex on the pill and no Progeny...My cousins daughter had the Rod in for 6 months... bam! preggers... and unfortunately the child had issues that the doctors attributed to the Rod.Scary story but true... speak to the doctor and get lots of advice. Also remember that the pill/rod won't protect you from an STI/STD! (or whatever we are calling them this week)

I am one of the many women to fall pregnant whilst on the pill....3 times in factA short story....at the age of 19 I was told I would never have children, but went on the pill to regulate my periods as they were all over the place, after a few months I fell pregnant...only to lose the baby at 15 weeks. My Doctor changed my pill....again a few months later we discovered I was pregnant again.....same heart breaking story as the first pregnancy and then the process was repeated a third time...with each pregnancy hope was raised and hearts were broken. My Dr was at a complete loss as to what to do with me so put me on the pellet that they insert in your arm....what a mistake that was!!! After 3 months Mr Fantasy (who was my boyfriend then), dragged me back down to the Dr's to get it removed after I tried to stab him! I then had an IUD put in....success!!!! It stayed in until we were married and decided to try and have children. After our first miracle was born I had another inserted, which was removed when we wanted to try for another child, after miracle 2 was born my tubes were tied within minutes of him coming out. We lost a set of twins in between both Miracle babies, my OBGYN is unsure if it was my body that terminated the pregnancy or a result of the IUD, so do your home work. My tubes have been tied for just on 3 years and as a extra precaution Mr Fantasy got the snip 5 months after I got my tubes done....why you ask? Because a friends mother had her tubes tied after his sister was born.....14years later he was born!Do not trust any contraceptive device or prescription, the only thing that is 100% fail safe is no sex at all.

Two kids and a visit to the clinic was in order.arrived at 8am Snip Snip, cup of tea and a mars bar and in the car by 9am. Back working in a few days.Too easy.I realise it's not for everybody especially if you see children in your future, but if you are done with breeding, man up and do the obvious. The alternatives for our women are complex and fraught with hazard.

I got a deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms from the pill. Since then, they will not let me use the rod or pills due to being at a higher risk of more DVT and PEs. As I haven't already had children I'm looking at general anaesthetic to have an IUD put in. The choices I were given after this was an IUD or hysterectomy. Either way it's more surgery and neither is a great option also with not having had children finding a doctor willing to go with the second option is not easy. :-(
