RHP Generation Gap

February 03 2010

I have a younger friend and have noticed that there are some things we just seem to think differently about.  It's like our brains have been wired in different ways.  I think this is the Generation Gap.  Has anyone else experienced this? Any funny experiences you can share?   Yesterday I asked him in chat what he was doing. He replied he was "doing FB" !  Mmmm... I immediately thought he was with a Fuck Buddy !!  After picking myself up off the floor (I was surprised by his blunt response), I asked him if he was fucking and he replied that NO he was on FACEBOOK ! LOL   Last night we got the munchies so went on a lolly run. Oh boy, did I feel OLD !!! HE was excited about lollies that I ate 30 years ago !!!! Before he was born !!! Really not good for my ego.  Does anyone else remember Curly Wurly bars from the 70s ?   Cheers, Miss Saturn

Apart from the usual communication difficulties when someone thinks I am taking the piss when I'm being perfectly honest, especially in regard to compliments, I haven't had too much trouble. What I find though is that guys in particular from the 20 something and below age group grunt instead of articulate. I blame FB, MSN, TXT, MYSPACE and the electronic gaming industry for this. It is as if they have only ever communicated by means other than voice and when opening their mouths.. words don't seem to flow. Naturally I am exhilerated to meet someone from that age group who surprises me with a free flowing conversation, and I suppose, to be fair, that's not so uncommon.   I thought cougers were supposed to hand out boiled lollies in exchange for all day suckers... or maybe I've got my wires crossed.   Hugs Stalky

I have always worried about when shorting Facebook down to FB one day someone who i speak to would presume i meant Fuck Buddy.  Hmmm I better be careful so not to have the same confusion.  I now have a craving for the chocolate and caramel goodness that is Curly Wurly... mmmmmmOn a serious note yes there are generation gaps but what matters is if you get along as friends and how you feel around each other.  I think that is the most important thing.

I have two - cough cough splutter splutter- late twenties year old nephews, I feel old just writing that...and whilst I think I'm up on the lingo they sprout out,it's their spelling that has me amazed. Things like "yer", whats that? Cant they just add one more letter and make it "yeah" or better still "yes"? Other spelling errors  irk me , but I can't say too much, the grammar poilce I'm sure will be in soon to cut me down.   As for Curly Wurlys, I jump up and down and stick my hand up and yell "me me- I remember them"!!! How about White Knights, Barretts Sherbit fountains with the stick of licorice in them, and SOS aniseed balls....mmmmm   Makes we want to run down to my old Ampol Service station from the seventies and pick up a bag of lollies, a sunnyboy and some chips.....

Oh Miss_Saturn, I think it is just their generation, and ours too.  I'm sure my parents had difficulty with our generation too.  But this text(ual) revolution is much further removed.  Gee I know my kids can converse and at the same time as soon as they don't want you in the conversation out comes the text speek. As for the loliies, hey Saturn65, you sure you didn't live up the road from me, my parents had an Ampol service station, what about the RedSkins and Choo Choo bars as well. Stalky have you been wearing that old trenchcoat again, stop trying to corrupt us with those boiled lollies......lol Cheers Lets

Curly Wurlys, never heard of them... must be my small town up bringing...   Tis not just the abbreviated language and differing lifestyles which is a worry with the Gen Z'ers of today, it is the manners... or lack thereof.   On my way home yesterday I helped a 20 something mother up the stairs at Burwood station and onto the train. Her method of saying thankyou was to grunt and walk away... I took her to task (I'd had a crap day) and she said "Why should I say thank you? You probably just want to get in my knickers anyway.".   I think I'll go back to limiting my help to frail old people who look lost.

We love to interact with people that are substantially younger than us. Yes there is a gap, but over a little time that is all forgotten and all have fun. The younger ones are enthusiastic, the mature ones have experience. Put them together you have an awesome (early nineties expression, I believe it is "douch" is todays and surely "fugs" will get a place in the future) experience for all involved. Gap closed! Remember the days when Twix were called raiders!

Just noticed that only XtremGuy is under 30 and responded to this post.   What does that say ???? Is everyone under 30 illiterate or can they only write in 3 letter abbreviations and struggle to form a paragraph ??   Well...XtremGuy, perhaps you would like to come and share a Curly Wurly with me ?  I can find some interesting places to put it although I may struggle to think of 2 or 3 letter abbreviations for the words I'd be expressing !   Lots of memories in this post... I LOVE the post-sex munchies !!! I"m having a dark choc mars bar and red wine now...   xxx Miss Saturn

yummy... Curly Wurly's, White Knights, Redskins, Milko Bars (most likely all time favorite, I remember when they were like 5c each!), licorice bullets, turkish delights... the list goes on and on :-) mmm have a craving for lollies and chocolates now!Lovely Miss_Saturn there is a definate generation gap and always will be between generations, although the gap being talked about... my generation...  I can understand abbreviating some words, but when a word is changed totally and its longer or hard to read then its original state that I think is annoying, not enough to change how I think of them, but merely because I would prefer to read it once then read it many times then try and work it out or ask what that meant? But some ummm how would you say wording of messages have made messaging alittle more understanding, for example... lol to indicate the laughing.... hehehe... a cheeky laugh... rofl .... once again laughing LOL... oh heres a good one that got me once....   ROBL .... now I thought "rolling on belly laughing" but I was wrong.... close but no cigar! In this case it was "roll on bed laughing"I remember reading somewhere I'm pretty sure here about making fonts for certain emotions... like happy font romans or sarcastic romans ... lol ... basically giving a form of direction for the message, as I'm sure we've all read something once and thought that was rude and it wasnt meant to be at all  :-)On a totally random different note... gotta love sitting in traffic and theres a personalized plate infront and trying to work it out!! love, peace and happiness to all  :-DOcean
