The Change in Size

October 26 2010

I was re-reading some of the forum comments about "Fat Chicks", BBW's and we all know MY thoughts on labels as I have been quite outspoken on this issue in the past. Any way, I was reading one young girls comment about how people in the 16 plus weight range can not commit to a healthier life style and it made me stop and realise an important fact in this size debate has been largely overlooked. Hanging in my wardrobe are two pairs of jeans. One says size 12 and the other size 20. I have worn them both in my life and am currently what I consider an average size between 14 and 16. The point is that I have a teenage girl in my care who wears size 6 jeans. My size 12's that I wore nearly 30 years ago are the same size as her sixes. How much have clothing manufacturers changed the sizes over the past 30 years to suit the times?

Yes I have to admit I am not the bean pole I was in my twenties, but then I don't play sport 7 days a week anymore. Recently I went shoping for shirts and pants. I would normally buy XXL shirts. As I haven't grown in height, weight or had some magical redistribution of weight I didn't think I needed to look at other sizes. Most of the stores I went to, I found that XXL shirst were so small, I couldn't actually get them on. As for pants, there was no way I could fit into my old size. After feeling quite frustrated, I ended up purchasing some up market Australian country labels that fitted perfectly. I have also found that if I want XXL t-shirts that fit me, I need ones manufatctured in the US. So in short, its not us as a society thats getting bigger, well we are, but maufacturers are making clothes smaller, giving twice the effect. Saying the average person has gone from a size x to size y is only half the information. We need to also know that a size y was a size x 15 years ago.

it's always been commented to me that i'm skinny, so much so i'm still convinced i don't look full grown. i'm just under 6' and fluctuate b/w 73 and 78kg. i have a pair of size 36 work pants that are snug on my meat n 2 veg and make my arse poke out like a black girls (not being racist i like booty).i finally have a tiny belly that pokes a little past the seat belt. i'm keeping it for a while just because it's my first pot (of this kind lol) then afterwards hopefully i can just get a little ripped.people always whinge about being fat, just saying, some of us HATE having always been labelled skinny.

I understand this delema as one of my children ahs this problem as well. She has two cildren already and only weighs 38 kgs. She hats that she is skinny. The thread is not about being fat or skinny though, it is about the way manufacturers have changed thier labels and sizes to reflect the times. Inlustwetrust I feel that partly the difference in sizes has to do with the off shore manufacturing processes. In days past Australia was a manufacturing nation and we had a large clothing industry right here. These days it is cheaper to manufacture off shore in places like China. Economically, Australia has evolved beyond that of a manufacturing nation but the places where our clothing is now made is populated by those smaller than us. We pay the price.

and other Asian countries is smaller than the Average Australian sizes.... in target in men's t shirts I was a 3xl in one and a xxl in another.... in some ladies tops I can fit into 18's and in others I'm still a 22... it depends on the cut, fabric and quality I think... doesn't make it easy or confidence boosting to have worked my butt off to get smaller and have to go a top thats huge on me and won't fit me in two weeks time....

I agree with fionabee... all clothing made in Asia are so off the scale its crazy... I am broad in the shoulders (size 14), but have a 10 - 12 waist, I have to buy XXL clothing if I shop in Thailand/Asia... then again, some people get hang ups having that 'lable' XXL... if the shoe fits wear it - it is bizarre tho.... just crazy how clothing sizes have definitely changed over the years !!

I am by no means fattist, but the word ample is often substituted in favour of voluptuous. The latter to me explains Maralyn Monroe, rather than someone a doctor may be inclined to discribe as obese. Jessica Rabbit was voluptuous in the film "who framed roger rabbit", it envokes images of an hour glass shape. A BBW is a big sexy woman, with a sexy attitude and a sexy persona, I love the confidence a BBW exudes, but BBW's don't look like Jessica Rabbit.

Marilyn Monroe was a size 16....so in this day and age...she would be probably classed asobese. For me...the difference between "ample" and "voluptuous" is only body shape. And yes...to the original posting..clothes sizing is ridiculous...size 8-10 here is size 0-2 in the US.JMO...BJxxx

i know boy shorts have elastic bands up the top, but the fact I have a medium and an XL that both fit me perfectly seems a bit more than just odd

Hey fiona......I havn't realy found that size changes have affected me over the years, Ive had a 30 inch waist since i was 18, and have found if I buy things that have a waist or a shoulder measurement your probably pretty safe. Women's sizes are somewhat confusing, different countries have different ideas of sizing......eg a US....Zero...is a Aussie 6......and that could translate into a Asian ...small to medium....or whatever they feel like ! Just for you, I can go down to target tomorow and try on some womans clothes, and get back to you on my findings if you like ?.... Tam

My mum (who is pushing 60) used to wear size 12 when she was a teenager. She hasn't changed her weight at all and she now wears a size 8. All her stuff that she's kept from when she was young, that's marked size 12 still fits her and wouldn't fit me in a pink fit even though I consider myself to be an average size 10. So yes, I agree Mrs W xx
