I have always been wary of ''Western Buddhists'', and as such never really given Buddhism itself any thought. I just finished a fantastic book ("Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind'' by Yuval Harari) which touches on religion and human motivation. He seems to be quite a fan of Buddhism, but not overly preachy, and he dwelt for a bit on how Buddhists see happiness. They believe life should not be about the pursuit of happiness, but rather the acceptance in life of unhappiness. The pursuit of happiness often results in people chasing ephemeral (my new favorite word) things that bring brief satisfaction but nothing lasting. He listed sexual pursuits among those ephemeral things, which really brought me screeching to a halt because it is true. I pursue sex to stave off loneliness, which it does but only for a very short time. The acceptance of unhappiness, granting it access, helps you confront whatever it is and learn from it. Learning brings you a little closer to enlightenment, considered the ultimate goal in a Buddhists life. Enlightenment brings you almost by default to happiness. That is paraphrasing, and I welcome any refinement from any Buddhists out there (cannot believe I am saying that). If I start talking about prayer flags, please feel free to shoot me.

What influences/philosophies do I live my life by ? Be kind alwaysDo not judge, you will never ever truly know or understand someone else's journey If you cant do anything with grace in your heart, do not do itBe grateful Which person or persons would you consider an influence in my life ? Definitely my mother who was the definition of a lady, full of grace and a true feminist who believed anything was possible for anyone if we really wanted it , worked for it, sacrificed for it and treasured it. She saw no barriers only challenges that were conquerable for women in her country. Many people tell me when I go home to the country of my birth that I look like my mother and I do. I hope in the future, many will say I act like her as well. She's been deceased many years now, my father more so, but I try every day (and fail) to be the daughter they deserved What is my catchcry or words of wisdom that you could share that perhaps could benefit others ? Only you are responsible for your happiness, no one elseYou choose your reactions you choose your emotions, you choose who and where you want to be You may be a victim of circumstances, but not a victimEmbrace your pain, then let it go, takes too much effort to carry it aroundYou are not going to be rescued, so figure it out for yourself And if you think you're having a bad day, pick up the book that many pundits say we all should read "Mans Search for Meaning" Viktor E Frankl, a definitive reality check And in closing, this too will pass

Parents and family are my focus and inspired me. Positive, honest people are my cuppa tea, they always give me positive vibes. Phases I use: Improvise, adapt and overcome, yes i use this often, along with don't be so negative. Lead buy example, always helps. Mates, family and work mates who appriciate, that I like to keep it real and honest, together with focused on the job at hand. You Always have time to be positive, and leave the bullshit at the door.

people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here. This is to have succeeded.

1. Karma, what goes around comes around etc so try not to be an asshole, but if you are ,make amends and move on 2. My ex husband sometimes the hardest things are the best teachers 3. Let It Happen - ever since I heard these lyrics from the Tame Impala song I thought they were a good theme song for life. You can’t stop good or bad ( Even that is labelling it, it just is) it’s inevitable so just experience it and self observe and reflect. Could be dead tomorrow so don’t be afraid and jump in. It’s also a cool film clip to reflect on mortality. - Posted from rhpmobile

@ Okeydoke. I also find Buddhism principles to be quite deep and interesting. I’ve also been down the path of searching out sex to combat loneliness and as you stated, it’s a false road, I found afterwards the loneliness was always still there and at times was magnified. At this present moment I’ve been single for the entirety of this year and have not had the company of any women in that time(sexually). It’s been about a year now since I have been sexually active, but moreso from choice as I didn’t want to fall into the cycle of meaningless empty sex again. The loneliness is still there but I can deal with that as I’m not confusing myself as to what causes my loneliness. As for prayer flags, don’t hold it against me but I have had them draped along my house at one stage and I think I have a roll of them still stashed away. I’m not fully aware of the meanings of them, but they brought me some happiness simply by the bright colours flapping away. Lol @Pipsqueak. Lovely words and sentiments. I’d like to say that from what I know of you and your outlook and approach to the world, that your parents would be proud of the person you have become. I find your posts to be enlightening, fair and always raising important issues. To speak up as you do for those that cannot, shows a depth of compassion and strong character. Kudos to you, never stop. I will search out that book you mentioned, I’m always curious to learn more about the complexities of being human and self improvement/learning is nothing to be afraid of. @Ms Foxy, Bonefide and HonkyTonk. Yes, I to am very inspired by my family and friends. I’m lucky in that I have a good bunch of them around me. I think my biggest idol in life was my grandfather, such a loving, yet mischievous fella who was loved by all that knew him. I often say that if I can be like he was then I’ll be content I’ve lived a fair and happy life. My children are also a major influence, as well as learning from them, I strive to be the best ambassador in life for them that I can, to show them that even though life can be tough, it’s what we make of it that counts. I’m so glad that so far I havnt failed them in that, I hope anyway. @Sassinak. Loved your post, those words resonated to me, I’ve never read Emerson, must say I don’t recall having heard of him but I’ll be searching him out. Thank you for sharing. @Earthqueen. Also very wise words and apt for us all. There’s definitly something to learn from hard experiences, another saying that I use is “you can tell how good a tradesman is by how well he fixes up his fuckups”. Pretty well meaning that no one is perfect and we all make mistakes, but it’s what we learn from our mistakes that often provides more answers than from getting things correct all the time. And yes, we really have no control over what can happen to us in life, so it is important to learn acceptance of what we are dealt I believe. Thanks all for posting. Wishing all of you the best in life and happiness. ☺️

Like a lot of us here, the love of my kids and being there for them as they grow up despite my divorce is a huge thing for me. The loyalty and friendship of my mates. We have all been there for each other during some really tough times so the bond towards each other is very tight. Last but not least is my version of a moral compass. Look after myself, be kind to others, support those I can. Don't play with a mates sister or ex. Seen the nasty results of that one from others and was enough to show the way lol. Keep those dear to me close and don't be afraid to walk away from destructive people friend OR family. Most of all be honest with myself and those I interact with.
