  WAAAAY back in Roman times, pineapples were the extravagance on banquet table settings, during festive activities. They were placed on the tables right next to the whole spit roast piggy.   Origin Language experts are unsure about the origin of the expression “upside-down pineapple.” However, some believe that the term comes from the 1960s and the onset of the swinging community during the sexual revolution at the time. People during the seventies would leave an upside-down pineapple leaning against a structure in front of their house. This would signal that there was a swingers party underway inside.   A pineapple was used as it had no use in sexual activity because of the sharp points, many thought a carrot, a cucumber was a good idea but that was quickly defeated as they could be used during activities.
