Horror Movies

January 23 2018

By request, discuss all things horror! My idea of a good horror movie requires more than just fake blood and jump scares. It has to be well written with good acting and the psychological aspect must be prevalent. Here are a few of my favorites. Train To Busan - Brilliant foreign zombie flick The Autopsy Of Jane Doe - Amazing film Lights Out Rec and Rec 2 (3 and 4 were, meh) The Collector - Not technically horror but so good! The Tunnel - Posted from rhpmobile

Watched "IT" by Stephen King. Being an avid reader of his books I was a bit disappointed in the movie. I don't get to the movies much and Netflix is my best friend lol Watched "The Cabin" a few weeks ago. Love the zombies genre. "Z Nation" is my favourite series. I am not really into horror that much. If anyone has any recommendations that will scare the pants of me, feel free

Thanks! 👍 Was waiting for sweetgem but I suppose she's away. I've watched all those on your list! Train to Busan is great! I almost forgot to breathe, with all the suspense! 🤣 I was wondering if I should showcase my Horror DVDs collection when I finally have my own place. Will my friends think I'm a bit "off"? (If they don't already realise that by now! 🤣😜)

Does that include real life horror too, SeekingAdventure? 😛 My idea of 👍🏼 horror movies involves psychological scare. The movies must make me feel chilled from my skin to my bones! That’s why I like the original Japanese version of The Grudge, which got banned by the Japanese government after they received so many complaints from their citizens. Hence, all the Grudge movies that are available to watch on YouTube these days are the remade ones. Anyways, here are my few favourites: - The Grudge (Japanese deleted version) - The Conjuring 1 - Dawn of the Dead (like this zombie movie because, it is scary to wake up to a world full of flesh eaters and not knowing what’s going on, what to do next, where to, etc.). OP, I have watched the Train to Busan twice and couldn’t help but to wonder how would I react, or handle the situation, if I encountered such horror! So yes, it’s a brilliant zombie movie for sure 👍🏼 - Posted from rhpmobile

We'll be fine in the Zombie Apocalypse if zombies moved like the ones in The Walking Dead. BUT, if they run marathons like the ones in World War Z and Rec, we'd best just say grace! 🤣😜 Stephen King's works are sometimes more suspense than real horror, don't you think? I watched Cujo, Pet Sematary, The Langoliers, etc recently and maybe they were all old movies, but they sure weren't scary! Maybe Hollywood will remake them someday and use CGI to bump up the scare factor.

I didn’t know if I should make a new thread about horror movies, as it’s not something that many people would want to read about in general, I suppose? 🤔 Plus I had a terrible back pain last night, so I got distracted and left it be 😛 Your Horror DVDs collection sounds so intriguing! You can imagine how exciting it is for me to hear someone has a collection of horror movies! 😄 - Posted from rhpmobile

There you are! I just mentioned you in an earlier post! 😉 The Grudge is awesome! Ju-On. It's rare to frighten me but Ju-On did! 😲🤤😓 Rosemary's Baby is pretty good. I just watched the miniseries yesterday. Zoe Saldana is the female lead. The Hills Have Eyes, and Wolf Creek 1 & 2. These scare me because stuff like that can happen IRL! 🤤🤤🤤 I Spit On Your Grave turns my blood cold too. It's gross and very disturbing. Anyone watched the Australian horror movie, Babbadook? It's a good production! The Dyatlov Pass Incident was so frightening, I had to watch it again... and again! The storyline is so original! Phoenix Forgotten ... that was sooooooo scary! And ah... another potent Asian (Hong Kong) horror movie - Rigor Mortis. I must've watched that three times too!

For all those that like the psychological scare you have to see the autopsy of Jane Doe. I had never heard of it and at first read I thought, meh, maybe one day when I have nothing else to watch, but now I wish I could go back and watch it again for the first time. It really wad that good. Just listen for the little bell! ☠ (That will make sense once you've seen it) - Posted from rhpmobile

More a dark thriller man than horror. Wish I could remember some of the good ones I've seen most would have been foreign though I would think. Two I really loved are for me not really horror but do come under the banner at times... one of my favourite films "Funny Games" (Austrian) and "Let the Right One In" (Swedish) but be sure to watch the originals as they were meant to be. To midnightblue I would presume as you are a King reader you have seen the original and compared both. I am going to watch the new one but have been hesitant as it runs far from the book. But it does look beautifully dark in imagery. Basically the opposite query for you PureP I really enjoyed the remake of I spit on your grave more than the original surprisingly as I am very old school (for a want of a better phrase). It allowed for more graphic scenes but done very realistically. I know remakes are a very controversial issue but I have seen there is a remake of The Exorcist that is supposedly in the making. For me this could be disastrous and a blight on the original. Yet if done well it could very well be one of the more frightening horror films as the original was seen to be.

For listing the titles of those movies, which give me something new to watch :) I have seen The Hills Have Eyes 1 & 2, Wrong Turn all 3, as well as Wolf Creek 1 (can’t take anymore of the gore 😅). I must say, the unknown part of these movies has a great psychological scare, but the gory part isn’t my cup of tea! I prefer non-bloody horror than gory horror. I have not heard of Rigor Mortis, is it a movie about Asian vampires, or is it a doco about dead bodies, PurePeony? - Posted from rhpmobile

There is a book '63' and film '65' called "The Collector" about a young man who collects butterflies who stalks a lass to collect her. I haven't seen the one I think you were referring to. I also remembered a seventies film and a classic of the genre "When a Stranger Calls" it scared the shit out of me as a teen and I do not recommend any parents of youngens watching it .

🤔 Both, actually! 😁 I read the reviews on Rigor Mortis and learnt that they deliberately cast famous old actors who used to act in the famous Hong Kong vampire movies of the '80s. The sinister singing by kids in the background is apparently the theme tune of one of those classic HK vampire movies too! Clever touches, I thought! Remembering the ol' vampire movie roots whilst lending a modern twist! Rigor Mortis will scare you, touch you, and make you cry at the elderly couple's love.

I have only seen the Insidious series, but not the other two nor Exeter. With the Insidious series, it’s ok to go in and watch it from a simple entertainment point of view, as they seem to repeat the same setting in each episode. But I still go and watch it in the cinema anyway, as I use that time away as a brief break from my duty at home 😜 The thing with me watching horror movies after I reached my 30s is, I watch them for pure entertainment purpose only, especially in the past five years, I am rather scared of humans than the invisible beings 😄 People are more scary than the dead! - Posted from rhpmobile

There was a time when I would have been excited about the fact that there is a new Hellraiser movie coming out but I lost interest after number 2. I do like the new Friday the 13th and also pretty much anything Rob Zombie makes. TCM movies are always good aside from the one currently on Netflix. That one was awful. I watched Pet Semetary not long ago and I still think it was a good film. Gage is so cute! - Posted from rhpmobile

I wasn't referring to the remake of I Spit On Your Grave. It was the sheer brutality, and the horrible rape scenes that made me go cold with terror. I'm usually ok with gore because it's all so fake, all CGI and special effects. But the things that happened in that series, and in Wolf Creek, can be real. I actually felt quite ill after watching those because they struck fear and terror deep within me! Erm... no idea why I still watch them though. 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe it's for the squirm factor and the adrenaline rush from fear! 😝

I couldn't agree more about the it could happen thing but I tend to like a little reality for darkness and to chill me which most horror fails to do. All that you spoke of in "I Spit on Your Grave" is times by ten in the remake so stay away. Recently revisited "Ichi the Killer" if anyone is into the gore factor.

Is indeed made based on a true incident that happened in the outback road somewhere up north of the country. There were a number of such true incidents took place around the time Wolf Creek 1 was made, so scary that the foreign travellers/backpackers stopped backpacking in the outback areas for a while. Pangolin, I thought YouTube has clamped down on people who shared full movies in their portal? It's great if they haven't, because it's not as if we can easily get Korean movies at JB Hi-Fi - their selection is measly, and doesn't give the awesome K-movie industry it's due recognition. Have you watched The Host? Not quite horror, more like monster genre, akin to Godzilla. But soooo gooood! It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Sector 7 was great. Has anyone else watched that?

You are right about the way SK writes. I also love Dean Kootnz. They both write similarly. Although Probably more suspense than anything. The thing I like about the books is using your imagination and building the suspense in your mind rather than on screen. Display your movies with pride. We all have our things that are part of our personality. Seeking thanks I will definitely look them up on Netflix although I sometimes don't like watching these things by myself (scardy cat) lol. Perhaps I need to find someone to watch them with who I can grab when things get too much Loved the conjuring 1, Nightmare on elm street, the funny side to scary movies, The ring, Love a bit of gore so Wolf creek was pretty good. Yeah youtube is pretty typical of the way society values things these days. I find if the film tends to be a more popular thing or by the considered major production countries they are quickly removed, but sadly for smaller countries or even b grade movies they are very lax in their removal. I pretty much only do horror with a comedic element - stuff like Evil Dead 1 & 2, Army of Darkness, Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Bad Taste, Dead Alive, etc. It cracks me up how directors like Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi cut their teeth on B-horror movies at the beginning of their careers, but eventually got picked up by big studios to helm massive franchises. - Posted from rhpmobile

So true but the Japanese do all genres of films to perfection in my opinion. Film makers that know how to merge dark, light, humour, good and evil into one and play so brilliantly on ones emotions. Sorry to go of topic but an absolute stunner for me is "Departures". Back on topic: I cannot recall names (bit useless with that stuff) but I have seen several good N.Z horrors some humourous, others dark and gritty. Anyone familiar with any?

Now, THAT's a great series! I found the latest season, Roanoke, really really frightening! Watched it twice already. 😜 And... American Gods! What an awesome production! The book sold millions of copies worldwide and is translated into 6 languages. And yet, it didn't quite cause a stir here? I love this series for so many reasons! It's a really original storyline! Old Gods vs New Gods! Which brings me to the totally bizarre Japanese horror, As The Gods Will. It is weird to the nth degree! Rich in culture cause you get introduced to a lot of iconic Japanese figures, but they aren't friendly even though they appear cute - they are all out for blood! 🤤 It's tense right from the start, no time wasted! It's got the race against time to be the last survivor, tick-tock against the clock suspence, which reminds me of... Battle Royale! Classic! I thought Hunger Games got it's concept from Battle Royale and true enough, when I read several reviews for Hunger Games, quite a few alluded to this similarity. Battle Royale trumps hands down in terms of scare and gore! Ok... I'm a total Horror movie freak now. 🤣😜

John Carpenter's ''The Thing''. The animatronics are still of a brilliant standard, the tension is at times unbearable (the scene where they test the blood samples from everyone on the petri dish is absolutely edge-of-your-seat). The ''poor pooches'' scene'. It just absolutely went ''Okay, would this be taboo? Would it be too much if we had this happen? Yes? Okay then, let's do it''. The ending is just right too. Shamefully it bombed at the box office because they released it around the same time as E.T. was released and everyone wanted cute aliens. This movie is far and away my favorite horror movie of all time, probably will be for the rest of my life.

We got to talking about him travelling alone and if he had any rides where he became scared. He hadn't, but he told me his parents were mortified when he said he was going to hitch around Australia. They showed him Wolf Creek to try and deter him. It is a true story in that it is a combination of very tragic murders involving hitchers over the years. it's not a literally true story.

Not into the ones that are just pure torture porn with no other real purpose than to try and shock e.g. the Human Centipedes, A Serbian Film, the Hostels, most of the Saw franchise, Martyrs. Those don't do anything for me. Many of the best horrors I've seen have no or very little gore, and rely much more on psychological scares. Not to say I don't do gore at all, there's a lot of gory horrors that I love, some of the zombie movies being good examples. I've recently watched some of the classic horrors like Night of the Living Dead and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and it's such a contrast to see how little gore there actually is in those movies compared to later ones. I'm another fan of the Asian horrors, the original Japanese versions of The Grudge and The Ring are all-time favourites of mine. A Tale of Two Sisters is a great one from Korea and Shutter is a Thai film that gave me a few scares. The western - usually American - remakes are never as good or as scary. Some of the more recent horrors I've watched that stood out for me were The Witch, Raw (French movie), The Autopsy of Jane Doe (even though the plot twist in that one was incredibly obvious), and the It remake. It received mixed reviews but I thought it was a good bit of campy horror and I loved the banter between the kids.

Lol Ruby. Horror movie right there on my tv, is pretty much my motto when I'm home. Its generally either sci-fi or horror. Having no significant other means no chick flicks - Posted from rhpmobile

For initiating the idea and creation of this thread. I suddenly have heaps of new (as in haven’t seen before) horror movies to watch 😁 I am also into vampire movies for different vibe of entertainment 😊 have been addicted to watching The Vampire’s Diaries and The Originals for a while until I got distracted by life. My mood for entertainment changes from time to time is all I can say lol - Posted from rhpmobile

I've already watched that. 😁 Im balking at paying top dollar for The Autopsy of Jane Doe at JB Hi-Fi. Waiting for prices to drop. How about Contracted and Contracted II? Or Thanatomorphose? Or J-Horror, Audition, recognised as a Classic for its scenes that make you squirm. 😜

The TV series, Hemlock Grove, is great entertainment! So is Penny Dreadful. I felt that was one of THE best TV series I've watched in a long while. The scriptwriter is a genius!

I'm watching Bright at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. It reminds me of Death Valley without the humour. Sweetgem. If you havent seen 30 Days Of Night 1 and 2 they are worth the watch as well. Peony, if I was to ever to pay top dollar for a movie it would be that one. Trust me, its thats good. - Posted from rhpmobile

The title 30 Days of Night sounds familiar, but I have very vague memory of whether or not I have seen the films. Will look it up and add it to my watching list 🤗 I can not afford to have Netflix or Stan or Foxtel at this stage, but will get either one when I’m able to. YouTube requires payment to watch most of Hollywood movies and series nowadays! 😕 so, like PurePeony, I also wait for JB Hi-Fi to go on sales for the movies/series that I want to watch 😛 - Posted from rhpmobile

I was going to message you but read your profile so Im respecting your wishes. 😁 I'll make a list for you of everything I have that I think is worth watching and post it here for you. There are some really good movies that are very obscure and it was only by luck that i happened across them - Posted from rhpmobile

Ooh yeah... That Serbian movie... that was the one that made my colleagues 🤢. I watched it and felt the blood drain from my face because it was THAT disturbing. That sick movie made me nauseous and giddy. 🤢🤒 Ok... making a trip down to JB Hi-Fi to pay top dollar for The Autopsy of Jane Doe soon. 😁 Sweetgem, if you were a vampire with turbo charged speed capabilities, you could come over to my place for Horror Movie nights! 😉😁 How come no one has mentioned Cube? I was so young when I watched it. It was an original storyline with great special effects where done guy ended up being sliced into cubes. 😨😨😨

THAT is one classic I love! Resident Evil? "My name is Alice. I work for the Umbrella Corporation..." 😎

I actually wrote the cube in an earlier post but then I thought it was more scifi audience than horror, but you are right. Great film! If you don't like the Jane Doe movie I'll reimburse you for the bad advice! 😁 - Posted from rhpmobile

🤣 I'm sure I'll liked it! I've been circling the shelves checking out the price ever so often, since it was first placed on the shelf. So... is she actually still kinda sorta alive when the autopsy was done? 😛

As someone previously mentioned it doesn't take long to work out what is going on in the movie but it doesnt detract from the movie itself. Just the same Im not giving anything away. That would be like telling you the ending to the Book Of Eli! - Posted from rhpmobile

The Devil's Candy tonight. Didn't realise who Ethan Embry was until I started watching, strange to see him looking so different to the baby-faced teen from Empire Records and Can't Hardly Wait.

.....doing horror movies nights if I was a turbo charged vampire.....I now wish even more that I was a vampire whom could move at the speed of a bullet train! 😆😆 I would sure be charging my crystals with you on the night of 31st too, if I was a vampire 😂 Speaking of vampire, I find the western version of vampires isn’t horror at all, as they look, move, walk and talk almost like humans except for their pale skin. But Asin version of vampires is totally the opposite of western version and look horror and disgusting! And they can only hop instead of walk or fly like the western version, nor can them talk! 🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️ - Posted from rhpmobile

Ended up being pretty boring. Didn't do much for me. Next one on the list is A Dark Song.
