While it appears that by sacrificing a man every time a women gets in trouble the AFL is doing the right thing I disagree. After the affairs the men were sacrificed the women faded away. The latest thing with the (anonymous)photo, she dropped the charges to avoid further scrutiny but the afl and Richmond name the guy and by association out her. The message here seems to be that women have a diminished capacity to be responsible for themselves and therefore a man should take the fall. This isn't equality or respect, its condescending paternalistic bullshit. Everybody needs to own their shit, male and female.

Quoting 'Sailbadthesinner'...The message here seems to be that women have a diminished capacity to be responsible for themselves and therefore a man should take the fall. This isn't equality or respect... Everybody needs to own their shit, male and female. ought realise by now that any time they post something online (whether image or text, and indeed any time they create or save any file on an internet capable device) there is some risk of that material turning up somewhere they did not expect or want it to. As @Sailbadthesinner rightly points out, both parties are responsible for what has transpired in this case. Therefore, I think both parties should face consequences, or neither should face consequences. The AFL is in no position to apply any form of sanction against the woman in the picture, and I'm not convinced it is appropriate for non-statutory bodies to apply punishments/enforcement actions (in place of legal action, or in addition to legal action). Rather, I think such matters should be handled by the police and/or the Law Courts as appropriate to the specifics of any particular case. In cases such as this, I think if the person photographed is not under the legal age of consent, the police ought not be involved. If feeling aggrieved, the person photographed may launch a (self-funded or Pro Bono) Civil Case at Law.

  • RHP

    RHP User

If a person under the legal age of consent has been photographed in a compromising manner, anyone and everyone involved in capturing and/or publishing such images should feel the full weight of the Law bear down like a ton of bricks. I can think of no excuse for such behaviour by any person at any time.

He's the one who committed a crime. He admitted to it. How exactly is he a fall guy? Or are you going against your own assertion and inferring that he shouldn't have to face the consequences of what he did? You know why she didn't want to pursue charges? Because she knows she would be the one who would end up being treated like a criminal and have every aspect of her appearance and sexual history pulled to pieces and used against her. It was already happening on social media before he admitted that he'd distributed the photo without her consent. He got a 3 match suspension, hardly a tough punishment. He'll be fine, this won't affect him at all. It'll soon be forgotten and he'll be back to being treated like some sort of God because he can kick a ball. It's the blind worship of sports people in this country - mostly male - that allows them to get away with all the crap they do that is the real bullshit. Just look at all those sports panel shows and commentator panels....full of guys who've sexually assaulted women, behaved appallingly in public, and done all manner of other nasty things and it hasn't hurt their careers at all. They're still getting paid big $ and ladding it up with the boys every week. There's lip service paid to stopping the sexism that is rife in the top male-dominated sports in this country but that's all it is at this stage, I haven't seen one of these guys face any real consequences for their actions. As for the nasty comment on the Flighty Females thread, I saw it. Some uncalled for comments yes, but a couple of valid points made as well.

Kids in costume running all over the neighbourhood. I was not prepared and forgot about it. Knock came and all I could find were kiwifruit and mandarins, bottles of vitamins, cranberry pills and multi vitamins. 🎃 That happened to us when we first moved to Victoria from North Queensland ten years ago. Nobody did it up there then, but all the little ones were out and about down here, all dressed up. They were offered sultanas, apples, some bags of popcorn and chips which didn’t really last too long. Year two we were prepared. These days, ours are out there with their friends, except for when it falls as part of cup weekend in which case we’re out camping. When that happens we carve a couple of pumpkins and do a treasure hunt for them.

and to serve as a foil to the wildly exaggerated claims made in pursuit of a highly emotive argument, I would point out (again) both parties to the current AFL photo scandal were foolish in their actions. Had either, or both of them stopped to think before they acted, the entire rigmarole will have been averted. It may be argued the photo ought never have been taken at all. It may be argued the photograph ought not have been distributed. It also may be argued the girl in the photograph could have immediately sought confirmation (checked for herself that) Nathan Broad did delete the photograph as and when she requested him to do so. The suggestion that Nathan Broad is solely responsible for this sh*tfight is simply false. It has been reported the young woman brought the matter to the attention of police in attempt to have the image removed from the internet (!!! Preposterous. Enough said). The suggestion that Nathan Broad (or anyone, ever) should be brought before a Court on charges (whether criminal or civil) and not be afforded opportunity to have evidence thoroughly tested (by cross-examination of witnesses, including the accuser) is prejudicial; anathema to the principles of Justice. This ought not be viewed as a matter of victim blaming. To bring charges and prosecute on the basis of untested evidence would leave open the possibility of prosecution under false and/or malicious charges. The consequences of such a change to our legal system would be devastating to our society as a whole. The statements made in respect of the character and standing of sportspeople (generally) and commentators (particularly) are overblown. It should be noted the incidence of poor and/or criminal behaviour by these people is actually extremely low when viewed as a percentage of total sports/sports industry participation (and a much lower proportion of incidents and offenders than in society as a whole). This is not to suggest such behaviour is or ought be condoned. Rather, I think it worthwhile to maintain perspective lest vast numbers of people are slandered by claims made in connection to relatively few actual offenders. The issue may appear more prevalent than it actually is because of the high media profile afforded to these cases (and frequently at the expense of other cases which may be more deserving of attention and scrutiny). The following AFL Stats are sourced from the 2016 AFL Annual Report: 650 Staff - includes AFL House along with staff at AFL Queensland, AFL NSW/ACT, AFL Victoria, AFL Northern Territory and AFL Tasmania. 1,404,176 - Total domestic participation in Australian Football in 2016, up 12.55% on the 2015 total of 1,247,575. 360,648 - Total number of participants in community club football in 2016 throughout Australia involving: 14,772 teams 2755 clubs 230 leagues 380,041 - Total female participation in Australian Football in 2016 compared with 318,880 in 2015. 983 - Dedicated female football teams. 22,004 - Participants In AFL 9s competitions (Social Football). 536,026 - Participants In School-Based Programs. 195,719 - Total number of NAB AFL Auskick participants in 3541 Auskick centres around Australia. 270,337 - Participants In School Competitions. 68,163 - Indigenous participants. 117,982 - Multicultural participants. 30,908 - Accredited coaches. 14,228 - Accredited umpires. 132,890 - Total number of participants in various countries around the world. Under the heading 'Legal & Integrity' (Page 112-115 of the AFL 2016 Annual Report), AFL General Manager Andrew Dillon notes beyond finalisation of the Essendon Doping Scandal, just three personnel were sanctioned under the AFL Rules for conduct prejudicial to the interests of the AFL (Rule 2.3 - Conduct Unbecoming). So, how many people involved in the AFL community were prosecuted for breaches of Law during 2016? What is that figure as a proportion of total AFL participants?

Quoting 'ontology' The suggestion that Nathan Broad (or anyone, ever) should be brought before a Court on charges (whether criminal or civil) and not be afforded opportunity to have evidence thoroughly tested (by cross-examination of witnesses, including the accuser) is prejudicial; anathema to the principles of Justice. did I suggest that he shouldn't have been afforded that opportunity? If he had been charged then he would no doubt employ the best legal counsel and be given the best defence with all the associated rights he would have been entitled to. Don't attribute claims to me that I didn't make.To suggest that there is equal responsibility on both parties in this case is, in fact, classic victim blaming. The usual, 'oh honey how could you be so stupid' patronising crap that victims - mostly women - have had to put up with for hundreds of years. He is the one who did the wrong thing here, he knows it, and he's getting off lightly for it.Also, what exactly is so preposterous about her contacting the police for help in having the image removed? She may not have the incredible breadth of knowledge that you consistently demonstrate and be aware that the police don't have a lot of power or capability to actually remove images from the internet. She was probably a bit desperate and hoped they might be able to help. It's very patronising and arrogant for you to infer that she was somehow stupid or wrong to have done that.I am so bloody tired of reading people's (mainly men's) justifications and excuses for the shitty way that so many men in positions of power treat women. Tired of seeing women dragged through the mud because people are upset that some entitled man-baby is missing a few games of kicking around a football, due to his own bad, sometimes criminal behaviour. This 'boys will be boys' crap just doesn't cut it anymore, sorry.

Not sure on his contract but 3 matches could be about $50,000 + For an anonymous photo. If the photo had identified her I would have little sympathy, but it didn’t. She has ever right to kick his arse to the kerb for the deception as a personal issue between them but to call in the cops was just counter productive. It’s amusing that you can slander a whole industry but her character is above question. For what it’s worth I think some of those commentators and players are creeps who don’t deserve the fame, but there is no shortage of women following them around adoringly clambering for a slice of the lifestyle. Who’s fault is that ?

Whilst some maybe victims in bullying cases or blackmail (can't think of a recent one) most are volunteers. In the AFL affairs farce no one was bullied or blackmailed four equally irresponsible adults conducted affairs, the men were publicly humiliated and compelled to resign the women were allowed to just fade away. In other cases women have posted nude photos of players on Facebook, some even made Womens Day, no charges no consequences, the players blamed for there own stupidity. In the Facebook saga the girl lied about her age and consequently got pregnant sadly the baby was stillborn. You can rave about male toxicity all you like but women hunt these men for fame and fortune, the AFL's message that women have no responsibility and men must take the blame is just as patronising and condescending as the "boys will be boys" excuse.I'm not interested in excuses for one side or tother just a bit of fairness.

"A low act Absolutely appalled by a post that has now thankfully been deleted." With so many deleted posts lately from different threads, it's hard to guess which one you were referring to.

It's cute seeing little kids and pets being dressed up in costume! I love the toddlers in Dinosaur onesies and dogs fitted with long, spider legs. I cringe at the lollies overload though. That much sugar isn't good for anyone. Maybe we should start giving out produce so the kids can go home and their mums can start making salads! 🤣🤣🤣 Or why not stationery? Pretty marbles? Bells with ribbons? Anything but lollies. 😛

Firstly, as to your request: "Don't attribute claims to me that I didn't make." You stated: "You know why she didn't want to pursue charges? Because she knows she would be the one who would end up being treated like a criminal and have every aspect of her appearance and sexual history pulled to pieces and used against her." By way of implication, here you state your belief (which appears to suggest you think) she ought be able to bring the matter for hearing before a competent authority without facing any scrutiny as to her own character, integrity, and behaviour in that authority's testing of her claims against him. Your statement reads as though you believe the woman in the photograph would have otherwise pursued the matter. (Of course, only the woman in the photograph is able to explain her own thinking on this matter). Would you call for a reversal of the onus of proof under Australian Law? Have you considered the impact to the principles underpinning our legal system? As to your statement: "Also, what exactly is so preposterous about her contacting the police for help in having the image removed? She may not have the incredible breadth of knowledge that you consistently demonstrate and be aware that the police don't have a lot of power or capability to actually remove images from the internet. She was probably a bit desperate and hoped they might be able to help. It's very patronising and arrogant for you to infer that she was somehow stupid or wrong to have done that." I will point out the internet has been broadly available in Australia for some twenty years. Over this period, the media has broadcast and otherwise published many warnings to the public. I am aware of schools informing parents and students of internet security precautions for some ten years now. Therefore, it may be seen that even a technological novice ought be well aware of the irretrievable nature of material posted to or via the internet. This is technology this young woman has grown up with, and so I maintain this aspect to the story is preposterous... As to your comment: "...boys will be boys..." You are the only person who has made this comment in this forum; nobody else. I have quite clearly stated I do not condone the identified behaviours, and my belief that both parties were foolish in their actions. I think it is quite poor form for someone to engage in risky behaviours, and then cry foul when the risks don't pay off. Some personal responsibility must be accepted by all parties who choose to take risks. I think your posts on topics such as this are not objective. If the AFL is such a toxic environment, how would you explain the ever-growing number of participants and supporters at all levels? You appear to entirely discount the sport's positive influences and benefits to society. By omission, you also entirely disregard the AFL's sustained efforts over many years to make the game more family (and female) friendly. Do you suppose it is mere coincidence female participation in the game grew by more than 60,000 between 2015 and 2016? Many of your posts (on various gender-related topics) appear blindly ideological in nature, have contained sweeping generalisations, and errors of fact (often to the effect that you tar all men with the same brush). You reveal you have a distinctly jaundiced view of men. A number of times now I have offered you opportunity to explain and educate others about your views in light of cited reference sources which have countered or highlighted flaws in your arguments. You have consistently gone to ground on such occasions...

Darnit... I missed the fun again?! I don't get the time to read the forums for weeks at a stretch and pity there aren't re-runs on deleted stuff! 😜 Lily's right - people have to learn to toughen up and not be too sensitive over forum posts. There is a spectacular life to be lived outside the forums. If comments made here have the power to cause anyone to be severely depressed / become suicidal / become a social recluse, etc. then it's really a great idea to seek out resources and help to strengthen one's coping mechanisms and toughen up. The root is always self love. Other people's opinions shouldn't elicit such strong reactions because why should it matter so much in the first place unless one places one's entire identity and self worth in some cyber strangers' perceived acceptance of oneself or lack of thereof. I used to want to shrivel up, curl up and die at harsh criticisms. Now, I'm unshakeable because I value the opinions of my close circle of respected friends and buddies and everything else is noise. 😊 It's always useful to find an outlet to ground ourselves with, and to build inner strength of character so that even if we have to walk alone through life, we can do so with fortitude, gratitude and joy. We are happy and content as we are, regardless of external factors. I've never bothered to contact the Mods to delete comments. Just let it be. In fact, best to let offensive posts remain so others can judge for themselves. And if we really really hate a post or dislike someone, we can always choose to disassociate ourselves and either not read any of their posts, read it and let it go, walk away, take eyes off screen, do something nice for self or someone else. People change, things change... life is fluid and there can be unpredictable curveballs. I've had "enemies" morphe into close friends and vice versa and with my own family, I've finally learnt that sometimes, the constant fights and disagreements are due to the fact that we are actually too similar! Angst, bitterness, constant griping, pettiness, acting like grumpy old men or women... it gets old and it often is wiser to just look away and choose to have nothing whatsoever to do with toxic people and their toxic fumes. Inhale... Exhale... Cheshire cat grin! 😁

Finally able to change my profile name! When I created my profile MrPlayful wasn’t available, so the nearest option was the old Mister_Playful... and for four years having to enter that bloody underscore every time I logged in was a pain in the arse lol.

Don’t have much time for footballers. I have no sympathy for them most of the time. So my comment wasn’t actually directed at the content of your conversations. But certainly LD. If you did that, that would be grand. :)

Interesting. I thought once user names were used, even if the accounts were closed, that they were never available again to anyone else. Thanks for the heads up 👍
