My big question is this, if we except that human slavery is wrong, how is it ok to enslave replicant humans especially given the degree they have evolved in this film ? ( tip toeing around a spoiler there) They have for all intents and purposes created a new species with the sole intent of enslaving them, to me that is wrong.

Quoting 'CandyDelicious' I didn't pick up any misogyny? there is a lot of very bad treatment of the female characters in both films, and the people saying they are misogynistic are basing their view on that. Plus the fact that many of the female characters are purposed for sex and pleasure for men. They're not looking any deeper at the themes that are being represented and highlighted, at the complexities that are shown in the female characters' motivations and behaviours, and not considering the fact that depicting something in a movie is not the same as condoning it. It's a dystopian future where all of our current human failings have been magnified a thousand fold and that is also reflected in the treatment of the replicants / AI characters. The movies are supposed to make you think about that and (hopefully) realise that it's all really fucked up and that things need to change.

Quoting 'CandyDelicious'I picked up that people were dispensable, i.e. Replicants, and people with disabilities re, people left behind. that's definitely another major theme.

I thought they were robots, although yes in 2049 it's like they are a new species.... but how? Admittedly I watched the first one late at night so perhaps I missed some vital info. Do you both think there will be another movie? Did U think there was a question over K origins? Sorry, don't want to put out any spoilers either.
-

My focus was on how trippy the first movie was - so I most likely missed a lot of themes.

They are biological beings, not mechanical or electronic, but they are to an extent programmable.
-

As Sailbad said they are biological - bioengineered humans which can be 'made to order' with different traits depending on what purpose they will be used for, e.g. extra strength, intelligence, physical attractiveness in the case of the female pleasure models, etc. I think I was the same the first time I watched the original, just mainly focused on the amazing visuals and music, and trying to follow the storyline. It was only the second and third times I watched it that I started to think more about some of the deeper meanings of it. They've definitely left it open for another movie, which I have mixed feelings about. There's a few Hollywood franchises that have been ruined by continuing to try and cash in by making too many sequels which progressively get worse. Hopefully that won't happen with this one. Agree there are still questions around K, and there were a couple of other things in general that I was confused about but I think those were just unintentional plot holes.

ooops, bad of me. I saw the original when it first came out and def need to see it again before I see the new one. Actually studied it for my Film course at Uni. Will make up my own mind if it is highlighting all of humanities bad and dark points... I have learnt sometimes a movie is just a movie... to accept it as it is without attempting to put your own personal views on it. Love the big buckets of popcorn at the movies...and a choc top.

Your not so subtle dig has been noted. Obviously I should have prefaced all my comments with the disclaimer that they are my own personal opinions and that other people are allowed to interpret that movie and any other movie in any way they want. I'll just shut up and get back in my box now.

Most folk who have read the forums over the years know that I am rarely subtle. I havent seen the original for years nor the new one as yet so I can make no comment on the theme of the movie. Your apparent pre-occupation with misogyny on so many topics, themes, music, movies etc is just a little over the top at times. Sometimes it can be good just to sit back and appreciate- or dislike something for what it is without over analysing it ...it can be ok to just chill a little.

Yep. The sequel is not particularly "deep" with its themes....but i try not to ask too much of movies other than entertainment first. And for that, it excelled, i think. I did read a review that pulled it to pieces for the roles its female characters played in relation to the males...i forget the name of the scale it performed badly on. But true. With both Bladerunners, ive tried to remember that what Phillip K. Dick originally was toying with was the idea of "what makes a human HUMAN..?" Do Androids dream...do they have a soul? And is that what differentiates a human from a non-human? And what is a soul? Is an "artificial" one any different? Are non-humans, actually human then? And so on. It was quite a short novel, from what i remember...without the epic scope of the movies based on it.

It's always good when a movie makes you think. I don't mind a robust discussion. To be honest, I like light movies usually as a form of entertainment/escapism so this is a refreshing change. :) We should have started a separate thread so that we didn't spoil it for anyone else. I was trying to be vague in my questions tho. 😚

If you think about it. Have you ever seen Annie be like that to a specific person on the forum? The title says guys, which I assume was referencing the male population of RHP In general. Sounds like Annie was not having a good day at the time and perhaps voicing frustration on this thread. It wasn't direct to anyone in particular. That's how I read it anyway.

..if anyone else had written my comment I doubt you would have batted an eyelid. At no time have I ever said you should shut up and get back in your box....they are your words. I still stand by my comment "sometimes it can be good to just sit back and appreciate-or dislike something for what it is without analysing it ". If you took the time to read back over your posts you may even agree there appears to be a bit of an ongoing thing with misogyny. Its obviously a thing for you. Fair enough. Another take on the movie....its set in 2049 (?) could it be highlighting if society doesnt make changes now about women's place in the world, it will be the same-worse in the future. Does that make the movie misogynistic or just pointing out that misogyny is still present? Once again, you can over analyse or just indulge the fantasy of a movie. I have barely posted in the forums over the past months.

No joy at the (rare) local singles night tonight, was one lovely lady I was hoping for more conversation out of, but she ducked off unexpectedly and quite early. I thought he played the character well...or as well as I thought a synthetic human, who knew he wasn't human but probably wished he was, would behave. Oh, I love the questions that the Blade Runner films pose and leave unanswered! But I've not seen Gosling in other films. Unlike Keanu Reeves. I watched John Wick 2 last week on DVD. I like and respect what he stands for and does in his free time...and I liked JW2...but most of his characters seem like variations of Neo from The Matrix.

I've been absent for a little while ... setting up our house in Brissie is both exhilarating and tiring :) Hubby hadn't seen the house till handover ... he absolutely loves it, job well done on my part lol 🤗 This having two gorgeous men in your life means you also have two who'll go through the 'to do' list a lot quicker ;) I have my beautiful daughter with me this weekend ... a day at Movieworld today. We both return home to Melbourne Monday, but I'll be flying in/out of Brissie till we settle permanently early December :) I have two places I call home and I love it :) Tomorrow my beautiful boy turns 21 (he didn't want a party but cash for his trip to Bali) and a family feast is on the cards this week to celebrate his big milestone :) It's a full life ... I love it ... Mary xoxo

try using a pine bark mulch or pine straw. but get your soil test d at a nursery to confirm where your at ,sulphur is whats needed to drop ph in soil ,or lime is ussed to raise it ,or you could by a pink or blueing hydrangea mix that raises or lowers it depending on what colour flower that is required - Posted from rhpmobile

They grow here fine and theres a big growing area in Coffs Harbour so they do OK in warmer, more humid areas. I think there is a certain type that is more suitable. I've killed two so far but my sister who lives nearby, but near the beach, gets loads. Maybe they also like the sandy soil? I wish I could grow them successfully, they are delicious. Have been bingeing on them lately while they are cheap.

Lol, yes I did that too the first time I went to Darwin... almost had to do a strip tease at the taxi rank lol. I also did the opposite going TO the UK a long time ago... living in Townsville a long time ago when I didn’t even own any warm clothes (we had to go shopping when we moved to Melbourne lol). I did however have a bottle of OP rum that helped quite a bit that night. No fridge in the motel room for the coke though so we just sat outside and drank it at room temperature, which was just about right!

Quoting 'Sailbadthesinner' Go to your local cafe and get a bucket of coffee grounds and dig them in the top 200mm of soil. Yeah, I've been tipping my plunger coffee grounds into my tiny courtyard garden for over 3 years now...every morning I'm home...and my sandy Perth soil has improved heaps. I've had earthworms for a year or so, now.I thought, at first, that so much charcoal might be too harsh in a such a small area( it's only about 3 square metres of soil ), but the plants and worms are thriving.I guess that the washing out of the beans in boiling water leaves just good organic matter.

The other good thing for Perth sand is the Home brand clay kitty litter from Woolworths, add a few bags to your garden beds, dig it through, wet it and turn it over again so it breaks up, the clay holds on to the water and stops it from just draining away through the sand. 💐 🌷 👍
