Apologies before I start as this vent is weight related. In the past few days I have had three friends notice I have lost weight. Now for me this bugs me as I struggle to keep weight on me if I cannot do weight training exercises and a bit over three weeks ago had a double hernia operation and cannot do any heavy lifting for six weeks or so. Cannot wait for those weeks to pass. Even got a forest starting in my yard as I cannot utilise the whipper snipper

Finishing up a hard day today. stopped on the side of road to take a phone call, last for the day, finished about 4:45, started car to head home (40-minute drive, looking forward to a beer), just about to drive away and the rear window smashes. Some kids had thrown stones over the fence from a caravan park and smashed my window. Doesn't cost me anything as company car but the principle, and the wasted time for me, took another hour before I could rive home, now also have to waste more time to get a replacement Grrrrrrrr (insurance guy asked if anyone was injured. I told him my foot would have been if I could have caught up with the kid.)

Is wrong with the world? More to the point what's right? I mean a little girl lost her hand over the weekend. In the kindest way she placed her hand under a fence to pat a dog. The cunt of a thing bit her hand off.....literally....very Sad.
-
RHP User
If as I understand it the dog was locked up, the child should never have gone to pat it without discussing it with the owner. AND the parent should have not allowed it either. My 6yo knows that some dogs don't like strangers coming too close so she ALWAYS asks to pat them first, if the owner isn't around, she stays away. We lived with a gorgeous pit bull who was placid as a lamb until commanded to "protect". There are some common sense preventative measures we put in place to minimise any potential harm and my daughter never had an issue. While it is extraordinarily sad for the little girl of course, the dog is NOT at fault. I blame the parents, pure and simple!!! And we as humans are at fault for believing that we can implicitly trust any animal

Understanding.......the little girl put her hand innocently under a fence to pat what she thought was a harmless puppy dog....I've owned dogs all of my life, my family and most of my friends all have dogs, anyone of those dogs would more than likely ignore a little hand under their fence, a best - lapped it...a dog which literally bites a humans hand off is not normal behaviour for 99% of all pets. Again flippin sad...

ever poke your hand under a fence or through a fence at a dog. I have been raised with pig hunting dogs. They never hurt us but would tear a pig apart when commanded. We were taught to never approach a dog we didn't know and never stick your hand out. My kids know this as well. Especially if the dog is on its own property. very sad for the little girl

Valid points on both sides of the dog attack (I haven't seen any facts in this case) If you own a dog with such potential, you need to be responsible and protect the public, including supervising visitors to your home. Children should be taught to respect a dogs "personal space" To expect that any child will respect a dogs "personal space" is foolish, they need to be supervised. I often wonder why people in suburbia have some potentially very dangerous dogs ? They often say they need them for security... Does that mean that if someone breaks in the dog will lick them to death, drowning by saliva ? I didn't think so... So if that's the case, the owner knows the dog is potentially dangerous, and should ensure that kids can't put their hands through fences etc. Hp xo Because you're worth it...
-
RHP User
Totally agree with Findingmemo and MissB. Anyone who knows the basics of dog behaviour knows that children should be taught to never, ever approach or try to pat a strange dog, doesn't matter how cute it may look or how friendly it may appear. Children can do things which may appear innocent to us but come across as threatening or frightening to a dog and the dog will react according to their instincts. The girl putting her hand under the fence was a classic example, and it is the child's caregivers who are ultimately to blame for allowing her to do that. I take my dog to a leash free beach and I hate it when there are very young children there whose parents allow them to approach the dogs without checking with the owners first. I know how placid my dog is and that the chances of him biting anyone are miniscule, but the possibility is still there and if a child tries to randomly approach him I'll call him away. Only once I've had a parent / caregiver tell the children to ask me if it was ok to pat him, and I said yes as long as they patted him on his back and didn't put their hands near his eyes / face (I know he almost certainly wouldn't have reacted negatively if they did happen to do that but to a lot of dogs that can be frightening / threatening).

LD oh my of course the caregiver did not "permit" her to put her hand under the fence of an unknown dog. And I've no idea how you cum to that conclusion?...btw see what i did there - cum -....and of obviously the parents had instructed their child about appropriate animal awareness. Where was that ever said not to have occurred? Was it in the news? Did someone post that here? I'd say no none of the above. I'd say that's your speculation.

How do you know that the parents ''obviously'' had instructed their child about appropriate animal awareness? Where was that said to have occurred? Was it in the news? Did someone post it here? I'd say no to all of the above and that it's your speculation. I'd speculate that if the parents had actually instructed their child about animal awareness then she'd still have her hand now. As for the ''cum'' joke...am I supposed to find that clever or funny? If so then sorry, didn't work on either count.

it's not just so-called 'dangerous' dogs that bite. Any dog has the potential to bite if it feels threatened or scared, why do you think that so many dog bites are from the family pet.
-
RHP User
The dog wasn't at fault. That little girl did of course not deserve to lose her hand, however she was the one in the wrong by invading property (and the dog's territory) that was not hers to invade. Yes, I believe children should be taught to always ask first before approaching a dog and getting in its personal space. One of mine adores people, the other really doesn't. She's never bitten anyone in the ten years I've her, but I know she might if she gets startled or feels trapped. I do make the distinction between a child approaching my dog in public (where I'm aware of my dog at all times), and a kid sticking her hand through my fence when I'm not there. This girl invaded the dog's property and he did what he was expected to do: defend his home. Like LD said, any dog has the potential to bite. So sad for everyone involved.
-
RHP User
I do not have all the facts so won't go into that. However, I suspect it is very hard to control children 100% of the time, and I understand they can sometimes run off and do stupid things without thinking, and generally too late for a parent or carer to intervene. I had a neighbour awhile ago who had a large dog. It was not a vicious or bad tempered dog, but he took it upon himself to put extra netting around the boundary fence so that small dogs or children could not stick there noses in and potentially get them bitten. Just saying, but all very bad for the child.

It was an unfortunate accident and unless you personally knew the people involved, all anyone can do,is speculate as to why or how. Animals have their own instincts and often will perceive things differently to what we do. Personally I've worked and trained with k9's. However this does not make me anymore learned then anyone else when it comes to a strange dog, but it has taught me one thing. Each and every dog is different, based on breed, temperament and environment. While most will cry " put the dog down, it's a vicious beast" and " poor child, how horrific!" Agreed, it was horrific, and yes, poor child, but to completely blame the animal when all you know is what the media has bothered to report, is ridiculous.

Yep, shoot the dog, because you know all the facts. Like the fact a tradie that had been working at the house where the dogs (yes multiple) 3 to be exact where. The fact the same tradies kids had in the past played with said dogs, even the one that bit the kids hand, and lastly, what caused the dog to associate the kids hand coming under the fence as some form of threat. Ignorance at its finest.

My post above did not reference anyone, only that I have seen it used now several times in the last few months. My point is, there should be some etiquette in using others quotes/words from another forum topic (cross referencing). If one is to do that, reference where the source came from and also call them by name. How are readers to know especially if (") are used to quote and unquote, either put their name before or after a quote. Just identify the person (by name) is all I'm saying or ask them for permission and post that. That's fair?? Foxy

Understand both sides. My bad my response should have been posted in the other thread where you originally raised it. "If you cant say anything nice then DON'T say anything at all" posted by Blondie, Sept 5 2015. Where you posted "the other woman" page 2 Sept 7 2015, referencing "Nope" page 1,posted by Meander, Sept 6 205, referencing The thread " Why is it?" Posted by TwosomePlus, Sep 1 2015 which referenced "Because" page 2, posted by Zeena, Sep 5 2015. You are right. This cross referencing works a treat. We can all get a job in a library if we get this down pat. Dont take it seriously Foxy, " It's a joke Joyce" ....opps sorry Original quote from Graham Kennedy, From the television show In Melbourne Tonight (IMT) March 4th, 1972. Thank you Freya for raising the issue of special needs, it's a complex, varied and important one for any social conscious. Any such so called management of a special needs person in this way is as wrong as it gets on so many levels. The surprising thing about special needs people is when there is conversation about people's various situations or unique circumstances how there is only one or two degrees of separation with people around you in such a situation, just not everyone talks about it, which is cool it's about understanding in a different way to and what people are comfortable with. Being involved with special needs your not alone but can easily feel and believe your alone. You have a beautiful heart Freya, thank you.
